Terms of Service

The game

Race the Sky is a free browser racing game. Playing requires nothing but a browser. Optional social features — official leaderboards, tournaments, challenges posted as you, teams — use your own Bluesky (AT Protocol) account for identity. We never create accounts, usernames, or passwords of our own, and you must meet Bluesky’s own age and account requirements (currently 13+) to use those features.

The unlock

The one-time $4.99 purchase (“the Unlock”) is a personal, non-transferable license to cosmetic and creator features — the large ship, rainbow tail, towed banner, five-racer grids, and the ability to test drive, race, and share courses you build. It is tied to the Bluesky identity (DID) you were signed in with at purchase, delivered automatically on payment, and usable on any device where you sign in with that identity. It is not a currency, confers no competitive advantage, and may not be resold. Tournament champions may be granted the Unlock as a prize; granted Unlocks work identically but are not purchases.

Fair play

Official times are established by our servers re-simulating your actual inputs — times cannot be claimed, only proven. You agree not to submit automated, tool-assisted, or manipulated runs, and not to exploit bugs for ranked results. We may remove runs, disqualify tournament entries, void prizes, and exclude identities from ranked play to protect competitive integrity, and we may reset or reorganize leaderboards (for example at the end of a testing period). Casual play is never affected by ranked-play enforcement.

Your content

Ship banners, team names, and courses you build and share are your content. By sharing them (including via challenge links, which embed your run and any custom course in the link itself), you grant us and other players the right to display, replay, and re-share them within the game. Don’t include content in banners or course names that is unlawful, hateful, or infringes others’ rights — we may remove such content and revoke sharing privileges. Your Bluesky handle and avatar are displayed as you (that’s the point) and remain governed by your Bluesky account.

The usual conditions

• The game is provided “as is,” without warranties; play is at your own risk.
• Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us (at most, the price of the Unlock).
• We may update the game, these terms, and prices; material changes to these terms will be reflected on this page with a new effective date.
• These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which the operator resides; disputes go to the courts of that state.

Privacy Policy

The short version: we run no ads, no analytics, and no trackers; we never see your payment details; and your race history lives in your own Bluesky data repository, not on our servers.

What signing in actually permits

When you sign in, Bluesky asks you to approve what this game may do with your account. We request permission to write three kinds of record, by name, and nothing else:

• app.racethesky.run — your race results
• app.racethesky.course — courses you design
• app.racethesky.teamMembership — your place on a team

That is the entire grant. The game cannot post as you, cannot follow or unfollow anyone, cannot read your private preferences or messages, and cannot touch any data outside those three names — not because we promise not to, but because the permission you granted does not extend that far.

Earlier versions asked for transition:generic, a legacy catch-all that many atproto apps still use, and which produces a much broader consent screen. If you authorised the game under that older request, your session still carries the wider permission until you sign out and back in, or revoke it. You can review and revoke this application's access at any time from your Bluesky account settings.

What protects you meanwhile: the permission is broad, but the code is public and the data is yours. Every record the game writes is in your own repository under those three names, visible to you and anyone else, and you can delete any of it from your Bluesky account at any time without asking us. You can also revoke this application's access entirely from your Bluesky settings.

What we store, and why

• Identity basics — when you use social features, your Bluesky DID, handle, and public avatar (fetched from Bluesky’s public API) are used to display you in races, leaderboards, teams, and link-preview cards.
• Entitlements — a record that a given DID owns the Unlock (with a Stripe session reference), so your purchase follows your identity.
• Ranked results — leaderboard and tournament entries: DID, handle, verified time, and a reference to the run record in your own repository. Leaderboards are public by design.
• Teams — team name, join code, and member DIDs.
• Your runs — official submissions are written as records in your own Bluesky data repository (collection app.racethesky.run). They are yours: we read them to verify times, and you can delete them through your Bluesky account at any time.
• On your device — settings, local best times, ghosts, and drafts of courses you build are stored in your browser’s local storage and never leave your device unless you share them.

Payments

Purchases are processed entirely by Stripe. Your card number, billing address, and payment credentials go to Stripe, never to us. We receive only confirmation that a checkout completed, the amount, and the identity it was for.

Sharing

We don’t sell or share your data with anyone. Content that is public by design — leaderboards, tournament standings, challenge links you choose to post, and link-preview cards showing your avatar and time — is visible to anyone with the link. Our infrastructure providers are Netlify (hosting and storage), Stripe (payments), and Bluesky’s public APIs (identity).

Your rights

To remove your data, contact us (below) from or with proof of the identity concerned: we will delete your entitlement record, leaderboard and tournament entries, and team membership. Run records in your own repository you can delete yourself. EU/UK players: the identity data above is processed to provide features you request; you have the usual rights of access, correction, erasure, and complaint to your supervisory authority.

Children

Race the Sky is a general-audience game, is not directed at children under 13, and its social features require a Bluesky account subject to Bluesky’s own age rules.

Refund Policy

The Unlock is digital content delivered immediately on purchase. Even so: if you’re unhappy with it for any reason within 14 days of purchase, contact us with the email or Bluesky handle used at checkout and we’ll refund you in full, no questions asked. Refunding removes the Unlock from your identity. This policy doesn’t limit any non-waivable rights you have under local consumer law.

Tournament & Prize Rules

• Free to enter. Events that award prizes are open-entry: racing an official time on a featured course during the event window is your entry. No purchase is necessary to enter or win, and purchasing nothing about your odds — results are pure racing skill.
• Skill, verified. Standings are determined solely by server-verified race times in a deterministic simulation. There is no element of chance.
• Leagues. Entrants are placed in skill leagues seeded from prior personal bests, locked at first entry of each event.
• Prizes. Unless stated otherwise, league champions receive the game’s Unlock (approximate value $4.99) and an exclusive champion cosmetic. Prizes have no cash value and can’t be exchanged or transferred.
• One identity per person. Multiple entries via alternate identities, automation, or exploited runs disqualify all involved entries.
• Housekeeping. We may adjust schedules, correct errors, and void results affected by bugs or cheating. Void where prohibited by law.
• Course-design contests. Entering a course-design event (by posting a course link and submitting the post) is free, and votes are public Bluesky likes. By entering you license us to include your course, with credit, in the game's official roster if it wins. Finalists are chosen by community vote; the final roster is curated for quality and technical soundness.
• Tournaments are not sponsored, endorsed, or administered by Bluesky PBC or Stripe.
